La ‘nuit des lampions’ can be translated as “The night of the lanterns”. It is a annual event in the north of Luxembourg, in a city named Wiltz. This year it took place the 23. September, but I hadn’t managed to edit all the pictures until now (as I also had to edit all the pictures of my Paris trip). Anyway, during the night, a big part of the city is transformed to a fairy tale of light and magic:
There are hundreds of lanterns which glow mystically in the dark, torches leading the way. There are several local and international music bands playing as well as theater, dance and circus acts that will lead you into another world.
I have been to the ‘nuit des lampions’ a few years ago and since then the event has grown a lot! They extended their site as there are more and more people coming every year. Best time to go is at sunset, as the lanterns and light shows reveal their true magic in the dark. Entrance fee is 5€, children under the age of 12 go for free. There are different places for different purposes, like stages for music shows, a square for the theater, circus and light shows, a garden decorated with tons of lanterns and light shows and of course places to eat and drink . There is just so much to discover everywhere and everything is installed with a great love for art and expression.
As we were there we could witness a show that was beyond our imagination. People on stilts, huge dinosaurs, amazing light show. It was a first class show and there were no fences, you were just in the middle of it! We were all blown away.
To get to the city and site you can take the train or bus, which is probably the best option. There are special trains and buses running until late that night. There are small shuttle buses from the railway station in Wiltz to the event site. If you arrive by car, you can profit from a few park and rides with shuttle buses, but the one we tried in Wiltz was already over crowed and there were way too many people for the small shuttles. But we got really lucky and found a parking spot right in front of the site.
The ‘nuit des lampions’ is organised by ‘cooperations’, a social-cultural organisation who works with handicapped people. They also run a cinema and a really cute cafe/restaurant named ‘Prabbeli’ in Wiltz, definitely worth a visit when you are in the area.
