6 reasons why you should travel solo at least once in your life!

Travelling solo is one of the best experiences you can get for yourself!

1. It helps you to become more independent

Travelling on your own may seem frightening at first. You will have to face all the difficulties alone. But that is a great way to become more independent. When you are in a social group, you can always ask your friends for help or solve the problem together. On you own, you depend on people you don’t know. You will have to ask strangers for directions, you may need to communicate with hands and feet if they don’t understand your language and you will need to make all the decisions alone. The first few days it may feel a little weird, but you get used to it so fast and sometimes end up having drinks with the strangers you talked to. You will learn how to make decisions on your own and how to live with them if they were wrong.  All this will help you in your every-day-life back home to build a better self-esteem and to trust in yourself for getting things done.

2. It improves your social skills… a lot!

As previously said, you need to communicate a lot with people you don’t know. Lately, my boyfriend told me that he was surprised (in a positive way) that I talked to all his friends I didn’t know at a party. In that moment I realised that I made that a habit since I travelled alone for 3 weeks. The first thing I do when meeting strangers, I present myself and then just keep talking to them about really everything. When you are in a hostel you do the exact same thing. You see, there are a lot of solo travellers in hostels and just starting conversations with everyone makes it so much easier to get to know each other.

3. Fluency in languages will be improved

English isn’t my mother tongue. I’ve learned it in school but didn’t use it a lot. After talking nothing but English for a few weeks improved my talking so much. Remember that it is never a shame speaking another language not so well. Only by speaking and listening you will learn to communicate like the locals do.

4. You get to know yourself

When travelling solo you will have to spend a lot of time with yourself. So it will help if you like yourself as a person. When being on your own, you can figure out what you really want in life. You have all the time you need to think about important things like: What do I want to do for a living? Am I currently happy or just pretending that I am? What changes do I want to make that can improve my life? But you can also think about the small things like: What food do I want to eat next? Do I want to sleep the whole morning or get up at 7 to see everything around here? Do I want company today or do I prefer spending the day on my own? By the choices you make you will learn a lot about yourself and may be surprised what kind of person you are…

5. You can do whatever the hell you want

Really. You can do WHATEVER you want, WHENEVER you want! How cool is that?  You want to get up at 12 am? Nobody cares. You want that giant plate of pasta? Nobody is going to tell you shouldn’t. What about that 20km hike? You can do it and take aaaaalllll the time you want to finish it. As I like to take a lot of pictures, I love to take the time I need to get a good one. On my travels, I sometimes spent over an hour on the top of a mountain to do a timelapse with my gopro. No one is nagging or pushing you to hurry up. Enjoy your freedom!

6. It will change your personality

Coming back home, you will be another person. All the adventures you survived, the people you met and the cultures you discovered will change you… in a good way! You will feel like nothing can stop you nd that you can reach for the stars. Stressful days and difficult decisions to make? No more problem, because you faced a lot worse already. Besides… what can go wrong? Most of the time things are far less dramatical than they seem to you. Travelling solo gives you kind of… an inner peace which accompanies you through your life. And in my opinion, that is the true meaning of happiness 🙂

I really do like this post as I’m planning my first solo trip to Japan. Developing my soft skills, meeting new people and becoming more independent and organised will hopefully change me for the better. Solo travel is something I want to pursue, so I’m glad I booked onto my flights and the planning and journey of it begins now.

Good luck with your adventures. 🙂
